The History of the American Bureau of Shipping
The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) was founded in 1862, originally as a shipmaster certifying agency and eventually as an international ship classification organization. As such, it has devoted to promoting the security of life and property and preserving the natural environment through the development and verification of standards for the design, construction, and operational maintenance of marine and offshore assets. Since 1877, the ABS has published standards for iron material manufacturing for US ships. Since 1941 this organization has done so internationally. Part of their mission is the creation of a certification program for foundries and manufacturers, so the industry knows who can handle their high standards.

How ABS Certification Works
ABS engineering reviews the manufacturing process, manufacturing facility, and the qualification test plan. Then they send a team of inspectors to review and witness the manufacturing facilities processes and capabilities.
